MLK Mornings with AAMP

As part of this year’s MLK Weekend Celebration, sponsored by the Citizens Charitable Foundation, AAMP hosts three days of morning programming for youth and family on Saturday, Sunday, and on MLK Day! Our MLK Mornings schedule includes dramatic readings of text by MLK, a Dreamline workshop, and a special Transcribe-A-Thon where guests can give back by helping to turn handwritten and typed historical documents into searchable and machine-readable resources. Continue reading to learn more details about our MLK Mornings programming and register today!
Each morning for this opportunity will operate on the following schedule:
10:00 - 10:20am - Opening Message & Dramatic Reading

10:30 - 11:15am - Dreamline Workshop
Inspired by Martin Luther King’s legacy of equity, justice, and freedom, we will listen, reflect, create and share in order to move in the direction of our individual and shared dreams. Led by Youth Mentors, participants experience a series of intentional and creative activities that infuse imagination, awareness, community and positive change. Within a supportive community that celebrates bravery, diversity, and love, each participant will think of and create their own Dream Banner with paper, pencil and whatever art materials may be on hand. It is a simple yet powerful symbol of voice, vision for the future, and connection to others.

11:30 - 12:00pm Transcribe-A-Thon
Tune in every morning of MLK Weekend from 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. to learn about our Transcribe-A-Thon! To "Transcribe" means to make an exact copy of something. In our case, we will be copying written records by The Freedmen's Bureau from the 19th century. Transcription turns handwritten and typed documents into searchable and machine-readable resources. This not only means that content transcribed becomes text-searchable online (& discoverable!), but it also ensures that historical materials can be accessible for all. Together, we are unlocking secrets hidden deep inside our collections that illuminate our history and our world. We thank you for becoming a digital volunteer! Please note, the individual viewing links for MLK Weekend programs will be emailed to attendees immediately after registration, and again at least 30 minutes prior to the start of programs. Please be sure to check your spam and junk folders for these emails. With the exception of John Lewis: Good Trouble, guests can view all MLK Weekend Celebration programs using the museum’s Facebook LIVE feed. Click here to follow us on Facebook! Finally, please feel free to direct any questions related to attending our MLK Weekend Celebration to info@aampmuseum.org. Thank you for your continued support of the African American Museum in Philadelphia!
