Legacy in Action: Revitalize Mill Creek for MLK Day

Proposal for MLK Day Event: Revitalize Mill Creek
Submitted by: A New Dawn Incorporated
Event Date: Monday, January 20, 2025
Time: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Location: Mill Creek-Parkside Community

Event Overview

To honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., A New Dawn Incorporated proposes an MLK Day event, "Revitalize Mill Creek," designed to empower and engage the Mill Creek-Parkside community. This event will focus on a two-part initiative: cleaning up Aspen Farms to restore and prepare it for the upcoming growing season and canvassing the neighborhood to distribute flyers informing residents about programming at the Tiffany Fletcher Recreation Center, Mill Creek Registered Community Organization (RCO) meetings, and Mill Creek Advisory Council activities. The event will bring together local residents, Drexel University students, and volunteers to build community pride, enhance local resources, and share valuable information with neighbors.

Goals

The event aims to promote community engagement by fostering relationships among community members, local organizations, and Drexel students. It seeks to improve neighborhood spaces by restoring Aspen Farms as a vital resource for agriculture, education, and wellness. Additionally, it strives to increase awareness by informing residents about opportunities and programming available through the Tiffany Fletcher Recreation Center and other community organizations.

Schedule of Activities

Aspen Farms cleanup will take place from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, where volunteers will remove trash, debris, and overgrown vegetation while preparing planting beds and organizing supplies. Neighborhood canvassing will follow from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with teams distributing flyers door-to-door. The flyers will include information on free programming at Tiffany Fletcher Recreation Center, monthly Mill Creek RCO meetings, and Mill Creek Advisory Council meetings and resources. The event will conclude with a brief reflection and thank-you session for participants from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM.

Participants

Community members from Mill Creek-Parkside, Drexel University student volunteers, A New Dawn Incorporated staff, and Mill Creek Advisory Council members will collaborate to make the event a success.

Resources Needed

Cleanup supplies such as trash bags, gloves, rakes, shovels, and wheelbarrows are essential. Flyers with details about recreation center programming, RCO meetings, and Advisory Council resources will be distributed. Collaboration with Drexel University’s student volunteer program is crucial, and refreshments, including water, snacks, and a light lunch for volunteers, will be provided.

Impact

This event will directly benefit the Mill Creek-Parkside community by improving Aspen Farms and spreading awareness about local programming and services. Engaging residents and Drexel students will foster a sense of collaboration and community pride while reflecting Dr. King’s legacy of service and equity.
