Kensington Soccer Club aka Philadelphia Community Empowerment Through Soccer
http://www.kensingtonsoccer.orgThe Kensington Soccer Club (KSC) is a non-traditional soccer organization, combining aspects of traditional soccer clubs with broad-based community betterment and youth development initiatives. We serve more than 1,000 Philadelphia youth ages 3-19, with an emphasis on Kensington and the surrounding communities; Kensington has the lowest average income of any neighborhood in Philadelphia. Most of our players are Hispanic and African American; the vast majority are low-income. KSC brings soccer to kids and families who are new to the sport, using techniques that encourage educational achievement, conflict resolution, community-building, leadership, and healthy lifestyles. KSC strives to achieve the following: • Provide a safe, welcoming setting where large numbers of low-income children can learn soccer, teamwork, the value of exercise, and of working hard to achieve their goals; • Foster competitive opportunities for children who want to play soccer at a higher level and have committed to working hard to achieve that goal; • Connect low-income players and their parents to services and opportunities that they might otherwise not be aware of and be able to access; • Focus on giving teens and young adults a safe, encouraging setting where they can develop positive mindsets and behaviors while getting the benefits of participating in sports. Anti-violence messages are incorporated into our programs.
